Your card statement has different payment lines each month — the small mystery — the charge from a merchant whose name you do not recognize, the second statement from the same shop that does not match your receipt, the "pending" entry that disappears and reappears two days later. This article walks through the three classes of charge that look weird but are not, the one class that is actually a problem, and what to do in either case.
Different payment lines on your card statement: the three benign causes
Cause 1: the merchant's billing name is different from their trading name. The most common cause of unrecognized charges. The clothing shop you bought from might bill under their parent company's name. The independent restaurant might bill under their payment processor's name. The Caribbean has slowly standardized this — the network now requires the trading name to appear in the descriptor — but legacy processors still sometimes use the legal name. Solution: search your VendaVault transaction history for the date and amount; the vault stores the trading name even when the bank statement does not.
Cause 2: a pending charge and a final charge that look slightly different. A hotel hold and the final settle, for example. A gas pump pre-auth at one amount and the final fill-up at another. These look like duplicate charges on a card statement, but only one of them ever clears. The pending entry usually drops within 3-7 days; the final entry is the one you actually pay.
Cause 3: an FX-converted amount that does not match the receipt. If you paid US$50 at an offshore website, your card statement shows the JMD equivalent at the date the transaction settled (not the date you paid). The two dates can be a day or two apart, so the JMD number on your statement is not exactly what you expected. Your VendaVault shows the FX rate applied and the date it was applied; if those match the network's published rate for that date, the math is right.
Card statement different payment: the one class that is actually a problem
A charge that you did not initiate, that does not match any pending, and that is not pre-authorization shadow. Specifically:
- The merchant name does not match anything in your VendaVault history.
- The amount does not match a known pending or completed transaction.
- The date is recent enough that it is not a delayed settle from earlier.
If all three are true, the charge is unauthorized — most likely card-not-present fraud using a stale token, a leaked CVV, or in rare cases a compromised account.
What to do:
- Open the charge in your VendaVault and tap "dispute." Select "I do not recognize this merchant." The dispute is registered with your bank; the charge is conditionally reversed within 1-3 business days while the bank investigates.
- Revoke any active tokens for that merchant. Even if you do not recognize them, if a token is active there, revoke it. Five seconds; closes the door on additional charges.
- Do not call the merchant directly. Call your bank if the dispute does not auto-credit within 5 days. The merchant has no obligation to refund you for a charge you dispute; the bank does.
The "pending then disappeared then reappeared" pattern
A specific edge case that confuses people: a pending charge appears, disappears a day later, then a new pending appears for the same amount three days after that. This is almost always one of two things:
- A merchant batching their settlements. They authorize on day one, void the authorization, and re-authorize when they actually settle (e.g., when the order ships). Normal; the final charge is the one that clears.
- A merchant retrying a failed authorization. Their first attempt failed (network glitch, your bank's fraud check, etc.), they retried, and the second attempt succeeded. Also normal; check that only one of the attempts actually cleared.
If you see a pattern where the same amount appears, disappears, and reappears more than twice in a week, the merchant's billing system is misbehaving. Contact them; sometimes the right answer is "wait two more days for them to reconcile."
What your vault adds to the statement-reading process
Every Caribbean card statement in 2026 still arrives monthly. Your VendaVault gives you a daily version of the same data, with three additions the statement lacks:
- The trading name of every merchant.
- A live pending-vs-cleared distinction.
- An immediate "dispute" button on any charge.
Reading your monthly statement becomes a 30-second sanity check ("does the total match my vault?") instead of a 20-minute archaeology project ("what was that charge from 'STR PROC INTL'?").
Three rules
- If it looks weird, search the date and amount in your VendaVault. The trading name is usually right there.
- Pending charges that vanish are normal; pending charges that reappear are normal; recurring unrecognized charges are not.
- Dispute first, ask the merchant second. The bank protects you; the merchant does not have to.
